Microsoft manda en ISO

Y el decirme que no conozco la filosofía del software libre porque he propuesto hacer un plugin libre para un software propietario es argumento de talibanes de la FSF ;) (y de poca visión de futuro).

Al leer esto, se me ha presentado una duda: escribir una larga réplica o directamente no intentarlo. Soy algo pesimista y he optado por lo segundo.

No sigo con el tema de las libertades porque vamos, a algunos defensores del SL se les olvida que no por ser libre eres mejor y que también eres libre para usar programas propietarios... Supongo que tendré que cortarme las manos por escribir software libre usando Windows y Visual Studio...

Yo uso Windows y Visual Studio habitualmente, y sigo conservando mis manos.

Personalmente, intento ser lo más objetivo posible en lo técnico. Me gustaría conocer tu opinión (técnica) sobre OOXML. O que dieras la réplica a alguno de los posts del blog de Rob Weir que he citado anteriormente.

Reitero la mía: OOXML es un fracaso técnico, y al susodicho blog me remito (yo no podría hacerlo mejor). Pero es que, además de eso, es un fracaso moral. Todo malo, no lo quiero cerca de mí.

Te aseguro que no voy a ser yo quien intente imponer un discurso como el único válido, mucho menos uno moral. Personalmente, si en una circunstancia determinada dispongo de una alternativa libre técnicamente competente, la elegiré. Pero no te consideraré peor persona si, libremente, decides no hacerlo. Que una gran parte del resto del mundo no lo haga no es algo que me quite el sueño, ni algo que pretenda cambiar. Soy más simple que todo eso, y ante todo me preocupa más el debate técnico que el ético, porque no tengo ninguna fe en el segundo.

Eso sí, llegado el momento, permítime mostrar mi desagrado ante una opción que, además de técnicamente muy discutible, pone en riesgo mi libre capacidad de elección.

Que de cosas por responder, primero a Tei:

OOXML es el siguiente formato de Microsoft Office.

ODF está bastante influenciado por OpenOffice. No veo el problema.

Esta diseñado para soportar las caracteristicas de este programa, y de todos los formatos que soporta este programa.

Esta frase no se muy bien porque la dices. Ni que fuera un secreto o algo así. Si te lees la primera página de:

Verás que pone:

Ciertamente puede que a ti "el representar todas las características de la mayoría de los documentos existentes" y "buen formato" no sean compatibles, para gustos colores. Para mi es importante que mis documentos se puedan traducir a un estándar sin perder nada por el camino.

Respecto a problemillas, te posteo unos cuantos de ODF :) (de la wikipedia, pero buscando por internet te salen bastantes más):

The high-level comparisons so far have focused on tiny details (encoding, model used for the XML). There is nothing fundamentally better or worse in those standards like there is between XML Schema and Relax NG.

ODF grew out of OpenOffice.org and is influenced by its internal design. OOXML grew out of Microsoft Office and it is influenced by its internal design. No real surprises there.

Empieza de forma interesante:

A couple of weeks ago I heard some rumours that ODF had not actually only used SVG as vector graphics format but also even extended it beyond the standardized format. My initial response was that it had to be wrong information. One of the corner stones of ODF is namely that it reuses existing standards and that there is a "clean cut" between ODF and the standard it utilizes. This way I would be able to buy/aquire some library that supports SVG and simply incorporate it in my product implementing ODF. But if the referenced standard is extended - I will either experience less functionality due to extensions not being parts of the standard or I could experience crashing code when I try to pass the extended format to the external library - at least if it performs e.g. DTD/schema validation and finds out that invalid elements are present in the input.

Y en las conclusiones dice:

The modifications to SVG (even if they are minor) are bad enough as they are, because they basically kill high-fidelity interoperability when using existing SVG-libraries. When you are limiting the usage of some component (the limitations to the values of gradientUnits) you basically loose control with how existing data behaves. And when you enlarge a standard (addition of the middle-attribute of the stroke-linejoin element) you loose control with how your own data behaves when using it in other scenarios. You know, this is exactly what Microsoft did when they enlarged not only CSS but JavaScript. Maybe the memory of the ODF-founders is not that great, but I certainly remember the loads of crap-work we had to do in the late ninetees when creating web-pages to "IE5-compatible" browsers and "the rest". In fact - this nightmare still haunts us with the Microsoft additions to JavaScript.  Maybe they just thought: "If Microsoft pulled it off, so can we". I think that's a bad choice.

Also, you should note that ODF does not use SVG "as such" at all. They use fragments of SVG, i.e. elements with same names and attributes and then they fit it into the overall architecture of ODF. This is hardly "just referencing". As the paragraph says above (stroke-linejoin), the elements specifying this are not SVG-elements. They are similar to SVG-elements and even extended beyond this. I actually find it really hard to see or understand how the ODF TC can claim - with a straight face - that ODF only references SVG. I suppose that if I made my own JLSMarkup for document formats and used an element called <body> I would also be able to claim that I was reusing W3C xHTML 1.0. I just don't find it the right thing to do.

My only surprise is why this has not surfaced until now and how anyone can sit down and read in ODF (as being both pro-ODF or pro-choice) and not be just a little confused about how they could claim "just referencing existing standards", is a bit mind-baffling to me. I suppose ECMA could do the same with OOXML and claim "reusage of HTML DOM in OOXML-architecture" since a WordProcessingML-document contains both a <body>-element as well as a <p>-element.

Y ya paro con ODF, supongo Tei que tienes material de sobra para flamear la calidad técnica de ODF. O darte cuenta que ningún estándar nace perfecto. Tu mismo :)

Lo curioso es que alguien como Patrick, el editor de ODF, vaya y diga esto sobre OOXML:

Many national bodies, including the US, did not have resources to fully consider all the comments made on OpenXML.  However, today's loudest complainers made no requests for more time for review nor offered substantial resources to assist with that process. Now they pretend they haven't examined all of OpenXML.

The fact is the loudest complainers have enterprise level resources, far in excess of any national body, and they have reviewed all of OpenXML. The reason for the fear of the unknown campaign is there are no show stopper issues to be found.

Victor. Me alegra que estemos de acuerdo en este punto.

Porque es la base del sentido de mi argumentacion. Que OOXML no es un documento nuevo, sino una plataforma para soportar las caracteristicas heredadas del office.  Estas caracteristicas son cada una de su madre y de su padre, y aunque el formato estubiera bien hecho, no se podria evitar que fuera enormemente complejo.

No siento la necesidad especial de demostrar lo horriblemente lamentable que es OOXML, pero me parecio mas interesante analizar el porque.

Como veo que mencionas el ODF, te comento una cosa.

En españa existen mas de dos partidos politicos. Puedes votar al que te salga los huevos.  No tienes la obligacion de si no te gusta uno, votar al "otro". No hay definido "otro". Puedes votar a quien sea que cumpla tus deseos.  Incluso aunque sea un politico que solo vaya a tener 1 solo voto.  
No es democracia si votas a "uno de los dos" porque sientes que sino "tiras tu voto a la basura".

Usando esta analogia, si OOXML es una puta mierda, no estas automaticamente obligado a usar ODF, ni lo contrario.  Ambos puede ser bastante malos, puedes elegir un tercero, un cuarto, quinto o sexto, incluso abstenerte.

Christian Stefan wrote me to point out that the OOXML specification published by ECMA uses 1.5 line spacing, while OASIS uses single spacing. I quote from his message:

Y lo de ODF te lo he puesto no para que me digas que cada uno puede usar lo que quiera (que era de cajón), si no para ver si esa crítica tan "informada" que hacías de que OpenXML era un formato lamentable, que no debería haber pasado el filtro de comités, etc etc, se la hacías también a ODF. Y veo que has decidido pasar del tema :) (lo cual ya dice mucho claro).

Pues leyendo en los enlaces de Vicente, veo:

Lo cual me confirma que Open XML pretende ser la solución no-estándar a un problema que no existe.

Por cierto, personalmente, hasta el momento no he citado el formato ODF. Pero como por lo visto es más fácil atacar a ODF para defender a Open XML, voy a proponer el juego contrario: mirad esta tabla. Eso es lo preocupante, que una especificación tan horrenda y con tantos puntos cuanto menos discutibles sea aprobada por un comité de estandarización.
